How often should kitchen exhausts be serviced?
SCDF rules, insurance requirements and what good looks like.
Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) treats grease-laden kitchen exhaust systems as a leading cause of commercial fires. Compliance is not optional — your licence, insurance and tenant safety depend on it.
Cleaning frequency
- Heavy-use kitchens (24-hour, hawker, central kitchens): every 3–6 months.
- Standard restaurants: every 6 months.
- Cafés and low-volume operations: every 12 months.
What good looks like
A compliant exhaust clean should include: hood degrease, filter degrease, duct degrease, fan degrease, photographic before / after, and a digital SCDF compliance certificate uploaded to your portal.
Insurance
Most property insurers void fire cover if your exhaust is not cleaned to SCDF standards. The compliance certificate is your proof of cover.
